Remember how the seat on my bike snapped off because the bolt broke in half? I was walking around town and someone asks me, melissa i noticed youve been walking everywhere lately wheres you bike. i explain my bike was broken and that i was hoping that there would be a spare part at the work station but i honestly forgot to check and i was just dragging my feet about it. he has a shop that sells odds and ends and says to me, oh you should just bring it by and ill fix it for you. so i bring it by the next day and he gets the bolt for me and gets it all figured out in about 10 minutes and i say, how much do i owe you. he laughs and says, oh dont worry about its fine. so i went home and made him some orange banana donuts. which i brought by to him as a thank you. yay i have my bike back!!
today i was going to take a bike ride and i get to the same place where my bike seat snapped off and someone says to me, theres no air in your back tire. Damn. so now i have a leaky tire too, i put more air in it but if there is a hole i need to get it fixed. there is a guy who fixes tires in bassila and i will visit him hopefully soon. i just cant win lately with bikes. glad i didnt get 40 minutes into a bike ride before it decided to have a flat tire. my bike must know when to tell me these things. so im without a bike again for the time being.
oh and carleys mom, and other curious readers, how to crochet with plastic bags; take the bag and cut the bottom and the top off, so that you have a tube, roll this and cut it into pieces of about the same size, now you have loops, connect the loops together, now you have yarn!! crochet with said yarn. i personally like to make other bags of bags, but also ive seen belts, hats, and door mats made of the plastic bags. have fun be creative and if someone, anyone finishes something send me a picture, electronically is fine so that i can show my ladies that this is something that is good for people in the states too.

You and your poor bike. Arrrggghhhh!!!!
Maybe this is just happening so you can meet friendly souls in Bassila who will fix different parts of your bike for free. Or maybe it's just a gigantic pain in the neck.
I cannot wait to see what Judy will make with her crocheting. Maybe a saddle for her horses.....
Best, Mark Loehrke (Carly's dad)
OK, when you say cut into pieces of about the same size, are you saying about one inch wide or wider. And when you say connect the loops together do you mean loop them together in a way that there is sort of a knot each time? Like threading one end through itself around the last loop? Just want to be on the same playing field. What size crochet hook are you using?
We just saw Gran Torino, a new film with Clint Eastwood and he plays a bigoted old man but, he's a guy with a lot of tools who can fix anything, kind of like a lot of guys in Benin. (not sure about the bigoted part for comparison)
Thanks, got your references and it looks totally doable. I have been using my own reusable bag lately and have cut down a lot on the plastic resource coming into the house but there are still plenty around. I will let you know how it comes out.
It turns out Mark sent me some references for crocheting plastic bags, and in case you were also confused the comment with the Gran torino ref was from me and not mark. At any rate, I am ready to start crocheting some plastic bag bags any day!
