4 Months

4 months down, that is a sixth of my service. Its going by real fast. Heres an adaptation of an interesting post I found of another volunteer.

Things I see everyday;
- Goats, baby goats, pregnant goats, goats taking a piss, goats pooping, dead goats, climbing goats ive seen goats in all stages of life here today i actually saw a tracter trailor truck full of goats 5 levels of goats...
- Kids in their school uniforms, or khaki as theyre called here
- Latrines
- Babies, they are everywhere here. Ive held quite a few babies here and its a joke for mothers to say, ill give you my baby so you can take it back to the states with you. whats unfortunate is if i really did want to take their baby most women probably would say yes without a second thought.
- Women carrying 5 times their weight in logs, plastic items, bread, and water on their head
- Crazy African faberic, Ive gotten a taste for this and constantly am having clothes made, i dont drink or smoke but African tissue, aka faberic, is my drug of choice.

Things I see most days of the week;
- Zems or moto taxis basically a guy on a motorcycle or souped up moped taxing people from here to there
- A bush taxi carrying more people than i thought could possibly fit in a bush taxi along with all their junk on the top of the bush taxi.
- Someone butchering an animal
- The market, a much more lively version of our farmers market in the states
- Children running around without parental supervision, sometimes quite far from mom, Ive seen babies just crawling around all by themselves in the market only to find out that mom is at the other end and will pick the baby up when she passes around again.

Things Ive seen but not often;
- 4 grown people on one motorcycle
- Men holding hands and cuddling, this is perfectly acceptable here and it is unacceptable for men and women to display affection for one another, but also homosexuality is illegal here.
- Someone showing up to a serious meeting wearing faberic that has something silly on it like chickens or a print of lipstick or Ipod, Ive still to find and buy Ipod tissue but im on the look out
- A child light a market stall on fire
- 6 people use a computer at the same time and nobody knows how to type in a user name and password they just marvel at the fact the mouse moves around, no joke this is happening right next to me as i type this.

There you have it, hopefully maybe youll get a better picture of my life here. Things that at one time i might samy, what the hell is happening? i more or less shrug off now. but because ive seen things that in the states is crazy now when i see things that are actually really strange my reaction is much more deflated. Like when a child lit a market stall on fire everyone was surprised but me not so much, my reaction, oh well.

You crack me up! I can't even imagine just letting my daughter crawl around a market un attended... I can only imagine the mess she would make while I did my rounds around the market! Thank you for sharing your stories!

Congratulations on another milestone.
Here's something else you see every day: an AWESOME PCV everytime you look in the mirror!!!
Keep buying tissue. Our family became addicted as well. I had a chemise made out of tissue that had lots of matches on it. However, some folks here think they are cigarettes. When I've worn it to the hospital I get asked by some, "Why do you wear a shirt with cigarettes on it??".
Silly Yovos.
Best, Mark Loehrke (Carly's dad)

I hear you when you say your drug of choice is the tissue in Africa. I Love it and would have broughteven more home if I wasn't trying to travel so light. Love the listing of everyday stuff, in reality more of the world sees that as normal than what we are used to in the USA. I look at pictures from other parts of the world with new eyes.
