Benin postal service vs Peace Corps Volunteer

So Ive been waiting paitently for a few packages to arrive, along with my postmates, packages that were intended for christmas. Ive been going in everyday and saying hi to the postman and being all nice and friendly. Generally hes one of my more faveorite people in Benin, really nice guy GENERALLY. So I go in today, and holy crap there are about 15 to 20 packages all with priority mail written on them, so unless some other person in Bassila ordered a bunch of crap from good ole US of A, its for Peace Corps Volunteers. Right on top I see a package for me!! With my moms handwriting!! Oh it was an exciting moment. I was about to mark this as a very good day in Benin. After this the story goes down hill.

The following conversation is in french. I say to the postman, hey look thats for me!! Its what Ive been waiting for and bugging you about for the last 3 weeks!! How cool is that its finally here? He says oh yes that does look like its for you its got your name on it and your box number. And so I wait anxiously for him to get up and hand me the package. This does not happen. So I ask can I have it? No. I think hes pulling my leg, so I say but its for me that one right on top that says Melissa Perry in very neat handwriting you cant miss it. He says I know. Im getting frusterated with him at this point so I say, Can I have it, Ive been waiting since BEFORE christmas for that. He says No. So we go back and forth and I ask him well why the hell not its mine I want it, your the postman its your job to hand me the packages, the government pays you to have this cushy job of giving people their mail, so give me the goddamn package you insufferable bastard, I didnt say exactly that but thats about what I was thinking. He says, oh well I have to do paperwork for all those packages and its only me working, so I cant do it now. He was sitting on his ass talking to his buddy. If he had got started when we began this conversation he would have got it all figured out and I would have had my package and been walking out the door. He was not doing anything. So then I ask ok when can I have my package? Note its 9am, he says, oh Monday. What the hell it shouldnt take you all morning to fill out a freaking form when youre not doing anything anyway. Grrrr... ok fine postman Monday freaking morning and Id better be able to pick them all up. I have it marked on my calendar and I showed him so that he would get it together and fill out the paperwork instead of just sit at his desk doing NOTHING. oh and the icing on the cake, on my way out he locks the door behind me and walks out and says, I think Im going to get a cafe. As if there was no work for him, it wasnt even break time. Needless to say the postman and the postal service and I are not getting along. The end all be all of the story; Typical Benin....

That postman in killing me!!!! Carly has at least 4 boxes of stuff that were for Christmas, presents for the kids in her neighborhood- tell that to the postmaster and tell him to suck it! GRRRRRR. What is wrong with him? The good thing though is that at least I have hope that the packages actually did make it to Basilla, after leaving here mid November at considerable cost from this end. So you have given me hope, a good thing.
