Because i wrote last time about things that werent true im going to write this time about things that are true.
1 Beninese are very friendly. it is a common practice to actually go around on any given day and just say hi to a few people you know, sit in their houses, talk with them for about 15 minutes, have some water, then leave and go and greet someone else.
2 There are over 50 different languages spoken in Benin. This is true, of course some languages are just different dialecs of others, but for example people here in Bassila speak French, and two local languages are common, Anii and Nagot. School is taught in French, but those who did not attend school dont generally know French very well, so they just speak the local languages. Ive been asked how many languages are spoken in the States and they are veyr suprised when I tell them that we all speak one language, and only one language, some people who live closer to Canada or Mexico speak Spanish and French, and there are some people like down in New Orleans who speak Creole, but pretty much everyone speaks English.
3 Relaxation isnt just a past time here, its an attitude. Here you dont go somewhere to relax, you rid yourself of the thing that makes you stressed. People walk slower here, talk slower, get things done slower, and this is better in a whole lot of ways because everyone is so relaxed here Ive only seen one Beninese in a rush. Americans should take note.
4 People here are very clean. Much cleaner than Americans. Everyones moto is spotless, and their houses even if they dont have a whole lot in them are spotless as well. people here sweep our their houses daily, people here clean clothes within inches of their lives just to get all the dirt out of them, and some actually take multiple showers throughout the day.
5 The roads could use some work. There is one main road through town and its the only paved road, everywhere eles including roads to other villages such as Manigri and Kikele could use some help. Theyre all dirt roads and during the rainy season theres a lot of erosion and mud puddles happening the roads are just pocketed with pot holes. In Bassila right now they are working on a few roads to improve them and the one on the way to the internet cafe is looking really nice.
6 I like it here. Are there days where I have a few trials, yea Id say so, but generally everyday when I go to bed I know that I want to be here.
There you are some true things about Benin that you might not have known about. I have to get going now its time to visit the market maybe theyll have some good tomatoes and onions past few days the produce has been slim pickings.

The roads need "SOME" work?? You are too kind!!!
I did like the relaxed attitude there and it is surprising how hard it is to keep that frame of mind back home. I'm working on it!!!
Another thing that is true: you are AMAZING!!!! We are so so so proud of you.
Hope you had good luck on the tomatoes and onions!!!
Best, Mark Loehrke (Carly's dad)
I am loving that I get to read yours and Jessica's blog. they are really really good, and informative about what it is like there. There is so much to describe because it is so different there, that I struggle to convey that to others. You are helping me out with your wonderful descriptions. Keep up the good work,- Judy
