So heres the thing about my time in Benin, its on a strict schedule of leaving in two years. and if i want to get anything accomplished other than living in west africa for two years ive got to get started, this assumption is based on how fast things move here, they really dont move very fast. So before i went to work today my weekly schedule looked like this, show up to work at 10 monday to arrange the calendar for the next few weeks, tuesday meet with the woman who is the president of the womens groups, wednesday is open, thursday pick up furnature, and friday i have a peace corps meeting. nice week. i go into work today and its monday, so today at 10 like always i show up to work everyday at 10, on the dot, no later, ive been doing this for a month now. i show up and my homologue says to me why are you late? i look at my watch and im actually according to american time 5 minutes early. the president of the womens groups is here to meet with me. this was supposed to happen tomorow. so not only do i not have my crocheted items with me because i didnt plan on meeting with this woman but im late because she think we were supposed to meet on monday at 9 not like the plan we had made last week for tuesday at 10. so my homologue and i meet with this woman and we decide to meet again tomorow at 9 at her house. agreed. now my homologue asks me wheres you moto helmet, i of course chose to walk today instead of taking my bike so i cant run back and get it, and i say well today we were going to make a plan for the weeks to come and i didnt think i was going to need my moto helmet and he says oh, so we make a plan for the week. here it is tuesday now i still meet with the president of the womens groups only now its at her house at 9, with my homologue which wasnt the original plan but whatever, after that meeting i have another meeting with another organization to talk about mud stoves, wednesday i have another meeting in the afternoon, thursday and friday are still the same. now i wrote this down in my little planner because everytime i make plans with my homologue we get to the day and he gets the plan all mixed up in his head and thinks were doing different things than we actually are. next weeks plan is all about environmental clubs. everytime ive made a plan thus far with my homologue hes been all about it during the planning stage but then the execution stage never comes, basically we make plans but never actually use them. maybe that can be my great gift to my organization how to go against cultural norms and actually use plans to accomplish things instead of just making plans to maybe one day accomplish things. first step, time lines and use of calendars.
anyway im off to mail my ballot it should have ample amount of time to reach the US before the elections are over 3 weeks, i think itll be fine, at least i hope.
